Chapter I

The Story of the Ancient Americas

When the ice retreated, humans followed. They crossed Beringia's land bridge and found a world untouched: endless forests, towering mountains, rivers like veins across the earth.

The Paleoindians were the first, Clovis hunters pursuing megafauna across the Great Plains. Over millennia they spread from the Arctic tundra to the tip of Patagonia, adapting to every climate the New World offered, from the deserts of the Southwest to the rainforests of the Amazon.

In Mesoamerica, the Olmec laid the foundations for what would become the greatest civilizations of the Western Hemisphere. The Maya charted the stars with astonishing precision. The Aztecs built Tenochtitlan, a city on a lake that rivalled any in Europe. In the Andes, the Moche crafted gold and ceramics of breathtaking artistry, while the Inca wove together the largest empire in pre-Columbian America.

To the north, the mound builders of Cahokia raised an urban center larger than London. The Ancestral Puebloans carved dwellings into canyon walls. The peoples of the Pacific Northwest built societies of extraordinary cultural wealth. Through every era, the ancient blood endured, carried by generations into the modern peoples of the Americas.

"The mountains remember. The rivers remember. The jungles remember. The story continues in you."
